What we do

Whether you’re a developer planning new infrastructure, or a homeowner or business connecting your property to our network, Selwyn Water will be your point of contact for all drinking water and wastewater connections.

Selwyn Water manages the district’s drinking water and wastewater networks. We do not manage stormwater infrastructure. For information about stormwater services, including land drainage and water races, please contact Selwyn District Council.

Land development

If you're planning a subdivision or development that involves new water or wastewater infrastructure you need to follow Selwyn Water’s land development process.

This process ensures:

  • The Selwyn Water network has capacity for your development to connect
  • Infrastructure is designed and built to the right standards
  • New assets perform reliably over their design life

Our process includes Capacity and Connection Assessments, Engineering Design Approvals, construction auditing, defects liability, and final handover.

Connecting to our network

If you need to connect a property to our drinking water supply or wastewater networks – or alter change an existing connection, you will need to apply for a new drinking water, or wastewater connection.

Our team will support you through the process and help ensure your connection meets all water scheme requirements.

Development Contributions Policy

Selwyn Water has adopted as its initial Development Contributions Policy the relevant parts of the Selwyn District Council Development Contributions Policy which was in place immediately before Selwyn District Council amended it in line with the Local Government (Water Services) Act 2025. This was subject only to those amendments Selwyn Water considered necessary to reflect the change in legislation.

This policy will continue to apply during our establishment phase and provides the primary mechanism for recovering growth related capital costs associated with drinking water and wastewater services. We expect the policy to remain in place until any new legislation is enacted addressing the funding of growth infrastructure.
