How to read your bill

Your first bill will look different as it brings all your drinking water and wastewater charges together in one place, for the first time.

What to expect on your first bill

For your first bill, there are a few timing changes to be aware of:

• Selwyn District Council has already billed you for some charges up to 30 June
• New prices apply from 1 July - read about fees and charges here
• If you have a water meter; your bill may include water usage charged at both the old and new rates.

If you have a water meter

All charges (except water usage) will now be shown as a daily rate. Fixed charges will be applied over the number of days from 1 July 2026 to your latest water meter reading date.

You will receive your following bills quarterly. These will have both water usage and fixed charges for that time period.

If you are on a restricted supply

Your water unit allocation is a fixed charge shown as a daily rate and will be billed (in advance) in the first month of each calendar quarter (i.e. July, October, January, April).

What your charges may look like on your first bill

Here’s an example of how the charges section on your new bill may look, depending on what services your property is connected to.

Please note: If you have just your home on your property this is 1 SUIP.  If you have other inhabitable dwellings such as a separate flat or commercial space on your land these may be considered extra SUIPs that incur additional charges.
