The first water services entity to be established in New Zealand

Selwyn Water Limited was the first water services entity to be established in New Zealand by Selwyn District Council under the Government’s Local Water Done Well reforms.

On 1 July 2025, Selwyn Water Limited, became operational as the Council’s new Council‑Controlled Organisation (CCO), taking responsibility for delivering drinking water and wastewater services across the Selwyn district.

On 8 July 2025, the Minister for Local Government, Hon. Simon Watts, formally approved the Council’s Water Services Delivery Plan, confirming Selwyn’s approach under the new framework.

On 18 December 2025, Selwyn Water and Selwyn District Council successfully completed the transfer of drinking water and wastewater assets. Following this transfer, Selwyn Water now manages approximately $1.1 billion in water and wastewater assets under its own governance and financial systems.

We’re proud to be the first Water Services CCO in New Zealand setting a strong foundation for safe, reliable, and sustainable water services for our community.
