For now, all urgent water notices will continue to be published on the Selwyn District Council urgent water notices page.
Water outages and shutdowns
Water outages are unplanned. They usually happen because of unexpected issues such as a burst pipe or equipment failure. During an outage, our contractors may not have time to door‑knock, as their priority is to restore the water supply as quickly as possible.
Water shutdowns are planned. These are scheduled so maintenance, repairs, or upgrades can be carried out safely. Where possible, we notify affected properties in advance by delivering a works notice and, in some cases, by emailing affected customers directly.
We’re also working on new and improved ways to keep our customers informed, including additional digital tools and updates. More information about these options will be shared in July.

When the water is switched back on
We encourage you to flush your taps by running them for a few moments, starting with any outside taps. When water is shut off, air bubbles can become trapped in the pipes. When the water is turned back on, and the air is pushed out under pressure, it can dislodge rust or scale from the pipe walls. Flushing your outside taps prevents this being drawn into the taps inside your home.
For any water shutdowns, if you run a business that requires constant water service, you will need to organise your own water storage as necessary. If you have a sprinkler system, we recommend you inform your insurance company.
