Building a resilient drinking water network for our future
The Hartleys to Hororātā Pipeline Project is delivering a new drinking water pipeline to connect the Hartleys water supply scheme to the Hororātā scheme, strengthening the wider water supply network across the Selwyn area. This investment will improve capacity, reliability, and resilience, supporting both current users and future demand.
As part of the project, a new fibre cable is being installed between Hartleys and Coalgate. This will provide a more reliable way to monitor and control the water network, replacing the current mobile-based system which has limited coverage in parts of the area.
The pipeline forms a key link in a broader programme of infrastructure upgrades, connecting with ongoing works at the Whitecliffs Pump Station and the Coalgate Pump Station and reservoir.
What's happening?
The project is being delivered in three stages along the pipeline route:
Stage 1: Hartleys to Glentunnel
- Currently nearing completion
- Minor delay of approximately 1–2 months due to the State Highway crossing
- Expected completion: July 2026
Stage 2: Glentunnel to Coalgate
- Scheduled to begin immediately after Stage 1
- Expected duration: up to 9 months
- Work will progress along the route from Glentunnel to Coalgate
Stage 3: Coalgate to Hororātā
- Currently in planning
- Intended to begin after Stage 2 is completed
