Water Services Strategy

Our Draft Water Services Strategy 2026-2027

Selwyn Water is preparing its first Water Services Strategy for community engagement. This Strategy sets out how we will deliver safe, reliable, and sustainable drinking water and wastewater services for the district.

It outlines how we plan to invest in infrastructure, manage our assets, and fund water services to support public health, protect the environment, and meet the needs of Selwyn communities.

The Strategy engagement will also include our Fees and Pricing Policy and Schedule of Charges for 2026/27, alongside our Waivers and Remissions Policy. This policy explains when and how Selwyn Water may reduce, adjust, or waive certain charges, ensuring customers are treated fairly and transparently, while supporting the long-term sustainability of essential water services.

Why this Strategy will look different

Under the Government’s Local Water Done Well reforms, water service providers are required to develop a Water Services Strategy. These are typically longer-term plans, looking ahead around 10 years.

Because Selwyn Water is still being established, this first Strategy focuses only on the year ahead. It sets a clear direction for our transition to full operations, while we review our assets, confirm delivery timeframes, and develop a robust 10-year plan aligned with Selwyn District Council’s Long‑Term Plan.

By aligning this work with the Council’s Long‑Term Plan, decisions are based on the most up‑to‑date information about growth, costs, and community priorities. As a result, our Water Services Strategy will be reviewed in 2027, and we will continue to review our investments, systems, and processes to deliver increased efficiency and affordability for our customers.

We’ll be inviting the community to share feedback on the Water Services Strategy in May.
