What to do when a Do Not Use Water notice is in place

A Do Not Use Notice is put in place when the water supply may be contaminated in a way that makes any contact unsafe, including touching, inhaling, or getting water in your eyes.

How you can protect yourself

Do not use tap water from the affected supply for any purpose, including:

  • Drinking
  • Cooking
  • Preparing food
  • Brushing teeth
  • Making infant formula
  • Making ice
  • Washing or bathing

Do not use water from appliances connected to your water supply, including:

  • Fridges and freezers (water or ice dispensers)
  • Dishwashers

What you must do

  • Use bottled water or water from a tanker for all needs
  • Do not boil water – this will not make it safe
  • Do not shower or bathe using tap water
  • Pets must also be given bottled or tanker water

You will need to continue avoiding all use of tap water until the notice is lifted. This will happen once testing confirms the water supply is safe again.

Selwyn Water will continue to monitor the situation and keep residents informed of any updates.
